Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and add minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat.
  4. Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour one-third of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with one-third of the cheddar cheese.
  5. Repeat the layers twice more with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheddar cheese.
  6. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  8. Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.

Chef’s Tips

  • Use a mandoline slicer to achieve uniformly thin potato slices for even cooking.
  • Feel free to add chopped onions or ham for added flavor and texture.
  • For a crispier topping, broil the dish for an additional 2-3 minutes after baking.
