Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and add minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Pour in the heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat.
- Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour one-third of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with one-third of the cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layers twice more with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheddar cheese.
- Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.
Chef’s Tips
- Use a mandoline slicer to achieve uniformly thin potato slices for even cooking.
- Feel free to add chopped onions or ham for added flavor and texture.
- For a crispier topping, broil the dish for an additional 2-3 minutes after baking.
